Before our expedition the Team had to learn, and understand, why we needed Survival Rations. The simple reason was that we would need them if the weather turned bad and the conditions were not suitable to cook our meals on a stove. (For safety reasons stoves must not be used in tents). We decided to bring the high energy foods and drinks which were listed in the Chief Scout’s Challenge Training Manual. We also brought bits and pieces out of an typical Army Ration Pack.

1 Kendal Mint Cake

1 Chocolate Bar (‘Mars’)

1 Cereal Bar

1 Packet of Jelly

1 Packet of Mixed Nuts

5 Packet of Beef Cubes (‘Oxo’)

15 Sugar Cubes

5 Soup Sachets

5 Instant Drinks

1 Packet of Raisins

1 Salt Sachet

6 Water Sterilising Tablets

The above listed items along with the ration pack foods were sealed in a waterproof container (i.e. a small lunchbox) which was clearly marked on the lid ‘SURVIVAL RATIONS - FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY’.

All team members carried a small survival ration pack and we had to remember that its use was as stated above - for emergencies only!
