After we completed our training, training day and training hike we also had to complete a training cycle. The purpose of this was to get to know each others skills on a bike and to see whether our bikes would stand up to the long distances that we would be undergoing on our expedition. Luckily we had no major problems!

The Cycling Coasters stop for their first break in Ballasalla

We started in Castletown and rode through St Johns and Kirk Michael. 45 kilometres later and we were at the Crossags Campsite in Ramsey. The next morning we set off and rode back to Douglas, finishing our cycling at home.

At 2.00 p.m. we met at the KWC Armoury for a final check of our bikes and route plans by Mike Southall and Major Turner. It was a beautiful day and we set of on out first cycle ride together.

In Ballasalla we had our first stop for water and a little rest. We were all happy and getting used to the tremendous weight we had to pull up hills.

We really enjoyed going along the back roads to St Marks. There were hardly any cars and it was mostly down hill.

As we approached St Marks we could hear what sounded like rally cars. We turned the corner and found that the road was closed! We now had to cycle up hill 2 or 3 kilometres to find an alternative road to St Johns. We were not pleased!!

At St Johns we stopped for a snack at the café near Tynwald Hill. We could not stop for long though as we were behind our schedule.

St Marks, Isle of Man

We arrived at the Crossags at about 7.00 p.m. to find Major Turner and his children tucking into fish and chips! We however had to make spaghetti bolognaise! Mike and his sister turned up and sampled it - it was very good. The weather was still great but we went to bed quite early as we needed the sleep.

The next day we set off bright and early and were soon in Laxey. Nick then left us but the rest of the team had another 10 km to do.

From Laxey we continued on through Baldrine and Onchan before finishing an exhausting but enjoyable ride. We had learnt about each others skills and it was certainly worth doing it.
